Letters.

Missives from the writing life.

Volume 1, Issue 1

I'm writing you a letter

Note on looseleaf paper folded in the 'Chinese football' shape with 'to my lovely friend' written on the outside
A letter from my lovely friend Oli, circa 1999.

Hi everyone. It’s been a while. Next week the Write Life will return as Letters. In the meantime, I’d love to hear from you.

First, how does this newsletter look on the device you’re using right now? Is it easy to read? Does it fit nicely in the space provided? Does anything feel weird or broken? I’ve pared way down here, focusing on simplicity and flexibility. I’d love to know how that’s showing up in the real world.

Second, tell me what you want to read about here. Letters will feel familiar to longtime Write Life readers, but I’ve thought a lot about what belongs in this newsletter as opposed to my website, social media, or the New York Times. The new name evokes exchanging letters with a friend. Letters will include reflections and peeks behind the scenes that feel ill-suited for a public forum. Nothing too wild, though. I learned a good lesson in middle school about expectations of privacy in written correspondence and I don’t intend to forget it. Plus, I want you to pass these letters on to someone who’d like to receive them!

Upcoming topics include:

  • A fun little “what’s in my bag” feature about how I made a weekly commute to New York easy breezy
  • Reflections on my experience taking a very results-focused writing course with an industry legend—why I did it, what changed, and what comes next
  • A rumination on perfectionism and the importance of keeping momentum, because success in writing (as in many things) is a numbers game

What part of the writing life do you want to receive a letter about? What topics do you want to cover as if we’re chatting in the kitchen at a friend’s birthday party? Reply to this message or click the button below.
